  2. In case you want to see many of the products in person, then you can arrange to visit our showroom near Henley on Thames - about 45 minutes west of London off the M4 or M40. They then simply visit www.fairgift.co.uk or www.fairtradegiftlist.co.uk, type in your name and purchase whichever items they want to from your list."
  4. At any time you can check to see what gifts have been bought. And if you change your mind about what's on your list (from the items that have not yet been bought) or if you want to add more gifts to your list, you will be able to do this online, at any time.
  5. After your event, you can close your list. Then Fairgift will arrange to deliver as many gifts as we have received from our suppliers about 8 weeks after you've ordered them. The remaining gifts will be sent to you in one subsequent delivery.
  6. You will have access to your own Thank You Card Manager to help you with all those Thank You Cards that will need to be sent!

In case you have any questions at any point in the process, then simply email us and we will help you out.

Question: What is fair trade & why is it important?

Answer: As a fair trading company, Fairgift believes in ensuring that the producers who make our goods get decent wages and work in decent conditions. All our suppliers are members of BAFTS (British Association of Fair Trade Shops) or IFAT (International Federation for Fair Trade), who monitor performance regularly to ensure that they are meeting and improving on the standards set by IFAT.

The producers themselves are usually set up as non-profit organisations to enable small-scale producer groups to export effectively, and help them to develop their products for the northern market. Most of these are family groups or cooperatives, often in rural areas or small towns, who are highly skilled in their craft but have limited experience of selling beyond their local market.

By choosing Fairgift for your gift list, you are helping to provide much-needed jobs in many of the poorest countries and communities in the world - to people who are often on the margins of society with little or no other source of income.

Question: What are the principals of fair trade?

Answer: There are nine key fair trade standards:

  1. Creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers
Fair Trade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Its purpose is to create opportunities for producers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalized by the conventional trading system.
  2. Transparency and accountability
Fair Trade involves transparent management and commercial relations to deal fairly and respectfully with trading partners.
  3. Capacity building
Fair Trade is a means to develop producers' independence. Fair Trade relationships provide continuity, during which producers and their marketing organizations can improve their management skills and their access to new markets.
  4. Promoting Fair Trade
Fair Trade Organizations raise awareness of Fair Trade and the possibility of greater justice in world trade. They provide their customers with information about the organization, the products, and in what conditions they are made. They use honest advertising and marketing techniques and aim for the highest standards in product quality and packing.
  5. Payment of a fair price
A fair price in the regional or local context is one that has been agreed through dialogue and participation. It covers not only the costs of production but enables production which is socially just and environmentally sound. It provides fair pay to the producers and takes into account the principle of equal pay for equal work by women and men. Fair Traders ensure prompt payment to their partners and, whenever possible, help producers with access to pre-harvest or pre-production financing.
  6. Gender Equity
Fair Trade means that women's work is properly valued and rewarded. Women are always paid for their contribution to the production process and are empowered in their organizations.
  7. Working conditions
Fair Trade means a safe and healthy working environment for producers. The participation of children (if any) does not adversely affect their well-being, security, educational requirements and need for play and conforms to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as well as the law and norms in the local context.
  8. Child Labour
Fair Trade Organizations respect the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, as well as local laws and social norms in order to ensure that the participation of children in production processes of fairly traded articles (if any) does not adversely affect their well-being, security, educational requirements and need for play. Organizations working directly with informally organised producers disclose the involvement of children in production.
  9. The environment
Fair Trade actively encourages better environmental practices and the application of responsible methods of production.

Question: What about environmental protection?

Answer: Many of the fair trade standards are compatible with high standards of environmental protection. This includes using small scale, non-industrialised production techniques and requiring each IFAT supplier to have a policy dedicated to positive environmental practices and environmentally responsible methods of production. That is achieved in part by many of the community projects made possible by fair trade. In addition, Fairgift also tries to minimise damage to the environment by using recycled or sustainable materials wherever possible including using recycled packing materials as much as possible.
